Hands-On History Programs for Schools

A NJ certified teacher conducts the programs, which enhance curricula for grades 2-5.  Grade 3 and 4 programs meets NJ Core Curriculum Standards. Register by calling 973-694-7192 or eMail. All programs currently take place at the Van Riper-Hopper House, 533 Berdan Avenue, Wayne, NJ 07470

 

Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts:

Looking for a fun, educational way for your Brownies or Girl Scouts to earn Try-Its or Badges?      

The Van Riper-Hopper House Museum has developed programs to correspond with the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.’s Junior Girl Scout Badge Book and Try-Its for Brownie Girl Scouts

 

PROGRAMS FOR BROWNIES

 

"Stitch It Together"

 

See page 76, #1, #3  Try-Its.

 

Your Scouts will see samples of 1800s needlework.  Hands-on activities include sewing a card with yarn, sewing a replica copy book, and with safe, blunt-tip needles, sewing:

 

Ages 6-7 - Button Collage #2 Try-It

Ages 8-9 - Bean Bags #5 Try-It

 

Program length:  1-1/2 hour

Fee:  $10.00 per Scout                        Minimum 7 Scouts; maximum 12.

“Listening to the Past”

See page 154, #2, 4, and 6 Try-Its.

Learn more about the lives of Wayne's residents circa 1750-1786.  You will tour two of our historic houses, hear stories written in the past, and play games of the past.

Program length:  1-1/2 hour

Fee:  $5.00 per Scout                        Minimum 7 Scouts; maximum 15.

 PROGRAM FOR JUNIOR SCOUTS

“Folk Arts”

See page 154 , # 2, 6, and 10 in the Badge Book.

In this program your Scouts will find out the uses of historical  tools used to make folk art pieces on display.  Then they will  and examine old photos for “what they tell us about  the past.” Finally, they will play with replica toys of the past.

Program length:  1-1/2 hour

Fee:  $5.00 per Scout                        Minimum 7 Scouts; maximum 15.

 

Please make sitter arrangements for other children.  Scout Councils and the museums intend these programs for Scout achievements.  Compliance helps us maintain quality programs for the Scouts.
