Obtaining a Marriage License

 

Either the bride or groom must be a resident of Wayne.  If both the bride and groom are out of state, then they must apply in the town in which the ceremony will take place.

 

Before making an appointment to apply for a Marriage License, make all other arrangements, including date of marriage and finding an officiant to perform the ceremony.

 

An appointment for the application must be made within thirty (30) days of the marriage date by calling 973-694-1800 extension 3205 for date and time.  The license is only good for only 30 days after the license is issued.  The Vital Statistics Office must hold all applications for three (3) days, so please plan accordingly.

 

Bring the following information with you for your appointment:

  1. Driver’s license.  Either the bride's or groom's license must reflect a Wayne address.  If neither have a driver's license, a deed or a current lease can be used.

  2. Original birth certificates.  If no birth certificate is available, an English passport or immigration certificate is acceptable.

  3. An original divorce decree or death certificate if either one applies.

  4. One witness over 18 years of age, speaks and understands English.

  5. $28.00 fee payable in cash, check or money order.

  6. A date will be giving to the couple for license pick up.

Obtaining a Civil Union License

 

Either applicant must be a resident of Wayne.  If both applicants are out of state, they must apply in the town in which the ceremony will occur.

 

Before making an appointment to apply for a Civil Union, make all other arrangements, including date and officiant performing the ceremony.

 

An appointment for the application must be made within thirty (30) days of the civil union ceremony date by calling (973)694-1800 extension 3205.  The license shall only be valid for 30 days after the license is issued.  The Vital Statistics Office must hold applications for three days (72 hours), so please plan accordingly.
