A construction crew working at the intersection of Hinchman Ave at Ratzer Road, earlier today, struck a sewer drain pipe requiring a lengthy repair. The repair work is causing extensive traffic delays in the area with the lane of travel reduced to one lane. Road work is expected to continue past 2130 hours tonight.

The Township snow response crews have been working around the clock since 5:00 a.m. on Friday and will continue until roads are opened up. We need the assistance of the residents as follows: Do NOT park cars on street. We must have full access to plow roads back as far as needed. Do NOT plow or shovel driveways and/or sidewalks into road. Please direct snow back on to your property. The Township will remain on the job until all roads are clear and passable, but we need your help.

PSE&G asks for our customers’ patience and cooperation as we work to safely restore service as quickly as possible. As the storm gets closer, the utility will provide information about estimated restoration times. To report downed wires or power outages, customers should call PSE&G’s Customer Service line at 1-800-436-PSEG. PSE&G uses an automated system to handle customer calls as efficiently as possible. Customers who get an automated response when calling PSE&G are encouraged to use it, as it is designed to route their calls to the right destination quickly. The system also provides the option to speak directly to a customer service representative. If you have specific information regarding damage to wires, transformers or poles, we ask that you speak with a representative to provide that information. Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is preparing for the possible impact of high winds predicted to hit parts of its northern and central New Jersey service territory beginning tonight and continuing through Thursday. As a result of the weather forecasts, which include the possibility of sustained winds in excess of 50 mph, JCP&L has implemented the company’s storm preparation process, including staffing additional dispatchers and analysts at the regional dispatch office, and bringing in additional line, substation and forestry personnel. In addition, contractors have been notified they could be required to assist with storm restoration efforts over the next several days. Customers who are without power are encouraged to call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) to report their outage. In the event of severe weather, customers should immediately report downed wires to JCP&L or their local police or fire department. Customers should never go near a downed power line, even if they think it is no longer carrying electricity.

The National Weather Service has declared a Flood Watch, and Hazardous Weather Warning. Projections show us within a foot of flooding on the Ramapo, Pompton and Passaic Rivers, while the Passaic coming into two bridges from the west shows a higher level with a longer duration at near flood levels. Pompton Dam openings coupled with the holdback of the Passaic could give us minor flooding.

Burglery Suspects - ALERT

The You Tube link below is video obtained from a Wayne resident’s security system. After police responded to a reported burglary on Oxbow Place on Christmas Day (occurred on the 24th), detectives and uniformed officers canvassed the surrounding neighborhood. A resident on an adjoining street stated that on December 3rd a male and female had approached his residence asking to retrieve their football from his backyard. The resident provided police with a copy of the video. A burglary had also been reported on December 3rd on Oxbow Place. The next door neighbor of the December 24th burglary reported a male and female approached his residence on the Christmas Eve and asked if they could go into his rear yard to look for a football. This neighbor was shown a still photo of the December 3rd video and confirmed that the two individuals were the same people that he spoke to on the December 24th. Entry into the residence in both case were through unlocked rear windows. In the video it appears the male tries the door handle before the resident answers the door. Jewelry was taken in both burglaries from the master bedroom. Anyone with information related to these incidents are asked to contact the Wayne Police Detective Bureau which can be reached at 973-633-3530.

Mayor Vergano reports that there are approximately 225 PSE&G customers without power, and full crews are in Town working today. The Mayor also reports that he spoke with the Lt. Governor and with the President of JCP&L who informed us that their goal is to have 75% of Wayne customers up by midnight, and the balance by midnight tomorrow night. We were told that there are 34 crews working in our sector.

Dealers of motor fuel will be required to only sell motor fuel for use in a passenger automobile bearing license plates, the last number of which is an even number, on even numbered days of each month. Likewise sales will only be permitted to passenger automobiles bearing license plates ending in odd numbers on odd numbered days of the month. The storm continues to intensify with the major problems occurring with high winds. There are multiple reports of trees, wires and poles down throughout the Township. Residents are urged to stay indoors and STAY OFF the roadways. We have many reports of LIVE wires down. Residents should use extreme caution with all wires and report them to the Police Department ASAP. River levels remain below flood stage with current predictions for them to stay below flood stage. The Wayne Township shelter opened at 1200hrs.and is located at Kilroy Park. The address for Kilroy Park is 6 Concord Place. The shelter will remain open until further notice.

Wayne is in the beginning stages of the impact from Hurricane Sandy. At this time there are no road closures to report. The storm is expected to intensify with predictions still ranging from 4-6 inches of rainfall. Winds are ranging from 25-35 mph currently, with gusts expected in the 50-70mph range later today and overnight. As the storm intensifies and the winds increase power outages should be expected. These outages could last for several days or longer. The more immediate issues will be downed wires and trees. Residents should report any downed wires or poles to the police department. Wayne Township will open the shelter at 1200 hrs. October 29, 2012. Wayne public schools remain closed October 29, 2012, and a decision for October 30, 2012 being made later today. Willowbrook Mall is closed today with anchor stores having the option of remaining open.

Hurricane Sandy continues to advance on our area with the beginning effects expected to arrive this afternoon or early evening. Once it arrives conditions will deteriorate quickly. All Township services are prepared for the storm, with predictions not deviating at this time. Both the State of New Jersey and also Wayne Township have declared a state of emergency. Residents should expect winds increasing later today to 35-45 miles per hour, and winds on Monday increasing further with gusts to 50-60 mph. All should expect power outages due to falling trees and wires. These power outages could be for an extended period of time. Rainfall predictions at this time are for 5-7 inches which will produce street and river flooding. Areas prone to flooding should prepare to evacuate when it becomes necessary. Vehicles should be moved to higher ground on Monday.

Confidential Shredding Day

The Green Team for the Township has scheduled a Shredding Day for confidential documents, where Township Residents can bring their documents for shredding. This will occur on Saturday, September 15 from 8am until noon at the Town Hall front parking area. Residents will drive up , volunteers will assist in moving the documents to a shredding unit , for immediate shredding. The resident will be able to witness the process via cameras within the shredding unit. Wayne Township will get recycling Credits for the volume actually shredded and the resident will be assured the security of the process. This program is not opened for businesses.

Due to burglaries occurring within the Township since late April, the Wayne Police Department is advising residents to contact the Police Department immediately when suspicious activity is observed in their neighborhood. Residences that appear to be unoccupied after sunset are being targeted. Residents should make an attempt to deter these crimes through: lighting, vehicles parked in driveways, newspapers and garbage cans brought from the street promptly and televisions or radios playing within the residence. Community policing officers will be able to provide other information regarding preventive measures and can be reached at 973-633-3546. The Police Department has been deploying both uniform and plainclothes officers into residential areas in an effort to deter these crimes.

Mayor Chris Vergano and Emergency Management Coordinator Sandy Galacio are announcing a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) recruiting and training effort that will begin this month. CERT is part of Homeland Security’s Citizen Corp Program. Wayne Township initiated its’ CERT program in 2003 for the purpose of educating citizens in emergency preparedness and to offer training in basic emergency response taught by the Township’s professional first responders.

Nationwide Test of Emergency Alert System

On Wednesday, November 9, at 2:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, the first ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will be conducted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEM).

The EAS is designed to transmit alerts and warnings to the public at the national, state and local level. Although local and state components are regularly tested on a weekly and monthly basis, there has never before been a nationwide test or an activation of the national system. The purpose of the test is to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a way to alert the public during national emergencies.

Although FEMA will initiate the test, the FCC is advising local governments that they can use the test as an opportunity to work with local broadcasters and cable providers to educate appropriate government officials and staff about the system.
