Mayor Chris Vergano and Emergency Management Coordinator Sandy Galacio are announcing a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) recruiting and training effort that will begin this month. CERT is part of Homeland Security’s Citizen Corp Program. Wayne Township initiated its’ CERT program in 2003 for the purpose of educating citizens in emergency preparedness and to offer training in basic emergency response taught by the Township’s professional first responders.

Residents should be advised to be alert for unusual activity in their neighborhoods and immediately contact their local police department. Residents should also consider bringing in newspapers, mail and garbage cans from the street, leaving interior and exterior lights on during times of darkness so as to make the residence appear occupied. Nationwide Test of Emergency Alert System

On Wednesday, November 9, at 2:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, the first ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) will be conducted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEM).

The EAS is designed to transmit alerts and warnings to the public at the national, state and local level. Although local and state components are regularly tested on a weekly and monthly basis, there has never before been a nationwide test or an activation of the national system. The purpose of the test is to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a way to alert the public during national emergencies.

Although FEMA will initiate the test, the FCC is advising local governments that they can use the test as an opportunity to work with local broadcasters and cable providers to educate appropriate government officials and staff about the system.

DHSS Opens Call Center for Public Health Concerns in Aftermath of Hurricane Irene, Flooding, Power Outages

In response to general health concerns in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the Department of Health and Senior Services opened a toll-free Public Health Call Center to provide callers with information about prevention and treatment of mold, disposal of spoiled food due to power outages and water concerns.

"We have opened this hotline for the public because we recognize that this event is not over and many New Jerseyans are still working to clean up their homes and businesses in the aftermath of flooding," said Health and Senior Services Commissioner Mary O'Dowd.

To reach health experts in the Public Health Information Call Center, the toll free number is: 1-866-234-0964.

The call center will be open from 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday and during the weekend and Labor Day Monday from 10 am to 5 pm.

The call center is being staffed by health experts from the Department’s Division of Epidemiology, Environmental and Occupational Health who can answer questions about prevention/treatment of mold growth in flooded homes and businesses, disposal of food spoiled as a result of power outages and concerns about water that needs to be treated to make it safe for drinking and other uses.

The State of Emergency remains in effect in Wayne Township. The rivers have crested and have begun to slowly recede.

Residents are reminded NOT to drive through roads that are closed with barricades. Cars have been getting stuck in water inundated roads because drivers are not heeding road closures.

Willowbrook Mall, Wayne Towne Center are closed today & tomorrow.

Wayne Police, Fire and First Aid continue to work around the clock to assist residents in the impacted areas. Additionally, the Wayne CERT Team (Civilian Emergency Response Team) has members deployed to assist in the response operations.

The Wayne Office of Emergency Management will remain staffed throughout the response phase to this event, in order to assist our residents.

Regional Shelters are available for those who need a temporary place to sleep and do not have relatives or friends to stay or are not in a position to stay in a motel. For information on Temporary Emergency Shelters call 973-694-5050.

Wayne Township remains under a major Flood Warning as river levels continue to rise and will do so through today and into tomorrow, and are projected to crest during the day tomorrow.

Roadway flooding is prevalent in all impacted areas along and adjacent to the Ramapo, Pompton, Pequannock and Passaic rivers.

Wayne Emergency Management operations remain actively engaged in emergency response, assisted evacuations and in addressing other event related issues.

Residents who have not evacuated and require assistance with evacuation may call 973-694-5050. For all emergencies dial 911.

Due to the magnitude of the event, response for assisted evacuations will be provided as soon as resources become available. There will be no assisted evacuations after dark.

Hurricane Irene is upon us, and is bringing heavy rain to Wayne Township throughout Sunday, accompanied by high winds. This will cause roadway flooding and a high potential for downed trees and power lines.

River levels along the Ramapo, Pequannock, Pompton and Passaic rivers are rising rapidly and are at flood stage. Projected rainfall amounts point to a major flood event.

Since it is difficult to test well water for all types of harmful and harmless bacteria, a certain group, known as coliform organisms live in the intestinal tract of warm-blooded animals, (e.g. man), hence they are excreted in large numbers. Any well water that shows the presence of coliform bacteria is considered contaminated and should be disinfected.

As a result of the efforts of Mayor Vergano, the Township Administration and members of the Passaic River Basin Committee, the Governor ordered the preemptive opening of the Pompton Dam. The Dam was opened at of 1400 hrs today and will lower the level of Pompton approximately 3 feet in an effort to mitigate the impact of the upcoming event.

On Sunday 8-7-2011 at 9:38 PM Wayne Police officers responded to Andover Drive on a report of a burglary in progress. After arriving on scene officers were told by witnesses they observed a black male approximately 6’ tall 200 pounds wearing a beige ball cap, a navy blue zip-up hoodie and black parachute pants running from behind the residence on Andover Drive. The suspect ran to a parked vehicle on Burnside Place. The suspect vehicle described as a gold Plymouth Voyager mini-van with North Carolina plates fled down Andover Drive towards Preakness Avenue. The homeowner informed the officers that he observed two men attempting to gain entrance to the home through a rear door. Both men fled after realizing the homeowner was present.

On Sunday 8-7-2011 at 11:00 PM Wayne police officers responded to a residence on Andover Drive to conduct a property check. The resident had left his home at 7:00 PM this evening and after returning at 11:00 PM discovered a gate to the rear yard open. The caller's residence was secure other than the open gate. The caller's next door neighbor's shed was seen to be open and after officers checked the neighboring house found that a rear window had been shattered. Officers conducted a search of the residence and found that the home had been ransacked.

Wayne Township residents are encouraged to immediately report all suspicious activity to the Wayne Police Department. The Township has experienced a spike in the number of burglaries this summer.

Volunteers Needed for a Disaster Exercise on June 4

The Wayne Township Health Department will host a disaster exercise on Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 10am to 12 noon. Along with the Office of Emergency Management, the Health Department will be operating a mock drive-through point of dispensing (POD). A POD is a temporary clinic site where medication or vaccine can be given to a large number of people in the event of a naturally occurring outbreak or a bioterrorist attack. In order to simulate a real world event and test our capabilities, volunteers are needed to play the role of victims who will drive through the POD. All vehicles will receive an American Red Cross Personal Emergency Preparedness kit. One kit per vehicle.

If you are interested in volunteering, please call (973) 694-1800 x3281 by Wednesday, June 1st to pre-register and receive your appointment time to drive through the POD. Pre-registration is required.

Due to the rainfall received over the past couple of days flooding is occurring in the low lying areas near the Pompton and Passaic Rivers. Residents in Hoffman Grove and the low areas of Old Wayne should move their vehicles to higher ground now ahead of increased flooding. All residents in areas prone to flooding need to be extremely vigilant and monitor the situation closely and be prepared to take action if necessary.

Cassidy was found ten feet down a dry will. He was so frightened when he arrived at the shelter in March. No one has claimed him, so this handsome young lad is now available for adoption. He has overcome his troubles and his sweet personality is shining through. He is over a year old, neutered and is declawed. Cassidy loves to snuggle and prefers to be the only pet.

The Wayne Interfaith Network (WIN) is partnering with Wayne Township to bring assistance to residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the recent flooding. Volunteers are collecting cash and gift cards to Khol's, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Home Depot, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and four area supermarkets including Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Foodtown, and A&P. Gift cards in small denominations of $20 are preferred.

Donations and gift cards can be mailed to the Wayne Interfaith Network, c/o Packanack Community Church, at 120 Lake Drive East, in Wayne, NJ 07470.

The Wayne Interfaith network is accepting donations to help Wayne families who were displaced by the recent floods. This volunteer group is collecting cash and gift cards donations to Kohls, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Lowes, Home Depot, Bed, Bath and Beyond and our four area supermarkets: Shoprite, Stop & Shop, Foodtown and A&P.

Gift cards in small denominations of $20.00 are preferred. Donations will be distributed to Wayne residents through the Wayne Department of Social Services.

Due to the recent heavy rainfall, many rivers and streams are already at high levels. This combined with saturated soil will result in high runoff rates with the potential for moderate to major flooding. This is a potentially dangerous situation. Wayne residents immediately adjacent to the Ramapo, Pompton and Passaic Rivers are urged to prepare to evacuate as the higher rainfall amounts projected over the next few days will have the potential to meet or exceed the levels reached in the major flood of 2010.

River levels along the Ramapo continue to recede slowly as the Pompton is cresting and the Passaic shows sign of reaching its highest level at the Little Falls gauge. For Thursday through Friday, as a strong high pressure system moves off the Atlantic Coast, a series of low pressure waves are forecast to develop along a slow moving cold front. The combination of these systems will be capable of producing a widespread 1 to 4 inch rainfall, with locally higher amounts possible. This would cause additional flooding of our rivers, as well as small streams, and poor drainage areas.

The Passaic County Planning Department is conducting a Feasibility Study to create a Greenway along the Morris Canal Historic District, which passes through the municipalities of Clifton, Little Falls, Paterson, Pompton Lakes, Wayne, and Woodland Park. The Morris Canal Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, to recognize the right-of-way used during the 19th century to transport boats along inclined planes from the Delaware River in Phillipsburg to the Passaic River in Newark, and eventually the Hudson River in Jersey City.
